Thousands of residents gathered Saturday at festivals all over Cedar Rapids to commemorate the flood’s anniversary with an energetic confidence in the city’s future. Serve the City organizers estimated that 5,000 people showed up about 8:30 Saturday night to hear the Grammy-nominated Christian rock band Newsboys play at the Healing the Heartland Festival at Kingston Sports Complex. Performers took the stage throughout the day as people roamed through a community care tent and participated in children’s activities during the event centered on family fun and helping people in need.
Volunteers and professionals in the care tent offered free medical and dental checks and more than 50 booths, as well as free clothing, books and toys.
