A pair of Pileated Woodpeckers is nesting in a hole in a large dead tree in southeast Cedar Rapids. The hole seems to contain 1 male (with a full red cap and red cheek stripe) and two female chicks. The young shown here are about half grown. The adults are about the size of a crow, the largest North American woodpecker except for the similar Ivory Bill (if it is indeed not extinct). Within a few feet of this hole are another occupied by a pair of Red-Headed Woodpeckers and another with a family of Starlings.
