I went to Squaw Creek Park Saturday looking for the White Winged Crossbills and Rough Legged Hawk that have been reported there. I walked up along the evergreens behind Red Cedar Lodge, not seeing anything but hearing calls. Finally, I noticed two other men with binoculars on the other side of the trees. I joined them, learning that each had come separately for the same reason and that the calls I was hearing came from the one fellow's iPod.
The cold got us before we found any birds. Afterwards, I drove around the park. I found the deer at the golf course under signs that didn't seem quite up to date. The hawk was one of two sitting near the entrance. He's a red tail, not the rough legged I was looking for.
