Testing the old theory of what happens when hot water means arctic air, I threw a cup of hot tap water into the air while waiting for my car to warm up... Air Temp: -28 Wind Chill: -52
Hot Water Meets -28 degree Air

I agree with usually don't waste my time like this... It's HIS house and if he wants to leave HIS cup on the ground next to HIS garage he can. And what do politics have to do with this video? You people read WAY to much into this like usual.

I've got to try this myself!

Fun, but it's hard to tell what happend to the water. The rest of you who are concerned about the garbage, Mr. Bush, or Obama... are just missing the point!

I decided to test the theory out on both hot and cold. They both do essentially the same thing except the hot water has quite a bit of steam coming off of it. So hot water has a cooler effect – pun intended.

He didn't pick up the cup... I had to put it in the garbage can before I left for the day

Hey maybe he is just trying to contribute to global warming, we need a little bit right now Hee Hee Hee Lighten up Garbage, I am sure he'll pick it when it is not negative 29

Why does everything have to turn to politics, personally i think that is cool. I never heard of this before...
says ... on Thursday, Jan 15 at 7:12 PM
Can't believe everyone is upset about the cup. It looks like he possibly threw it into a garbage can next to the side of the garage that was out of sight due to the camera angle. And, how does this video lead to a political conversation?! Weird...

If the winds abate some, the temps will be colder. We all know winds hug some of the heat to the surface, although wind chills make this moot. Still, we are speaking raw low temps! Lets break another record!!!

Garbage is obviously still bitter about Gore losing in 2000. What does throwing a cup on the ground have to do with Bush? I just can't wait till all of you idiots that voted for Obama realize he is a wolf in sheeps clothing! Not bitter; laughing!

My Mpemba hurts.

To KZIA fan: This was planned last week before KZIA did it this morning. KCRG's meterologists had known days in advance how cold it was going to get. The producer had this planned since last week.

Thanks for posting that! Except I am not happy that you threw the cup down on the ground, especially if that was my house!

says ... on Thursday, Jan 15 at 2:11 PM
Hey, Mr. Wizzard, how about you pick up your garbage instead of just throwing it down on the ground. That'd be something interesting. Let me guess, you voted for Bush, didn't you?

says ... on Thursday, Jan 15 at 1:07 PM
Nick, that was cool. Have you tried the 2 liter of Coke and Mentos theory?
says ... on Thursday, Jan 15 at 1:03 PM
Looks like steam. Not snow.

I like to do this with hot dogs. It's crazy when they shatter all over the place.

*****UPDATE***** National Weather Service confirms around the time this video was made, Cedar Rapids broke its ALL-TIME record low. New record: -29 and there's a chance tonight could be even colder!!!

Just had a conversation about this phenomenon with a co-worker this morning. Her hot water pipe to her kitchen is frozen but not her cold water pipe. This is called the Mpemba Effect. And to think, my physics professor thought I never paid attention!
