It is possible for them to overwinter in Iowa. Should anyone find this guy or another russian tort PLEASE take it to a wildlife rehab person. DO NOT touch native box turtles they are endangered. Only remove them from imminent danger. Roadways etc

Hi I actually found a box turtle very similiar to this one. The DNR said that they are native to Iowa in our area. They have a lot of box turtles in McBride State Park. So don't fret about the winter. DNR said they bury themselves in the mud. :)

Thats a Russian Tortoise. You can tell by its skin, dome shaped shell, and its feet. They're not webbed... Mine looks isactly like it. It will die when winter comes....frost would surely kill it.

Why would you post this turtle if you were not going to have it or know where it was if someone was looking for it?

Where did you release him? In the sewage of the river? Or did you call the DNR?

Unfortunate as someone actually lost a turtle. LOST: Family pet, "Henry" the box turtle in Clydesdale Ct/Carter area, approx. 8" in length, will not bite, $100 reward for safe return, Call 563-552-2697, 599-5477 (cell) And where did you let him go?

We did let it go the day we found it.

That is not a native turtle to Iowa. Please do not let it go. It can spread diseases and compete with native turtles not to mention probably fail to survive. Looks sort of like it could be a Russian Tortoise. Commonly sold in pet stores.
