My fathers house

Why the different prices?

My faher had a limb take out is power line going to his house. An electrician that was passing by stopped. My father asked for an estimate, and the electrician said we don't give estimates, we tell you what it will cost. The price to replace everything from the meter box and up was $ 1,200. My father said yes because he knew electricians charged alot. Well he found out the next day that his neighbor had the same things replaced on his house during an ice storm 6 months prior. His bill was $431. Why the big difference? Both were an emergency to get fixed. My father was even charged $39 for aservice call, but the electrician was driving by and stopped when he seen the wires on the ground. Can anyone tell me why the BIG differencein price. Thank you

As an electrition all repairs to old services have to be brought up to current codes. If the service was old and did not meet curent code requirements this could be the difference in costs. Weather heads, masts, meter boxes, and wire all add up

Depends on what exactly was done. My dad had a the lines from the meter into the breaker box inside his home replaced last year in it cost him around 1k. I wouldn't be surprised if you were gouged either though... Hope a few get caught...

this is why the city is requiring the contractors to register with the city. if it was a registered contractor, he can go back to the city and have them check into the contractor for price gouging, or what ever else.

I think that is called Price Gouging.

This is sad to hear. I have no idea why the difference but with the flood and the situation people don"t have time to shop around. It's scarey to think our own neighborhood businesses would take advantage of this.I am curious what companies you used.
