Thursday about 5 o'clock the sandbagging of the Cedar Rapids water system suction pump house started. At about 10 at night a call went out for volunteers to help with the sandbagging. Hundreds of people came and in 2 hours 7000 sand bags were filled on the road at the end of the Edgewood Road bridge and passed along the drive in bucket brigade fashion in multiple lines of workers. About midnight a cry arouse from the mass of workers that they had completed the sandbagging. More sand bags were filled and loaded into dump trucks to take to other places. Many of the volunteers then headed for the Mercy Hospital sandbagging operation.
