This photo shows the Cedar River water level Thursday evening surrounding May's Island in Cedar Rapids. The photo was taken at around 9:00 PM and a well timed lighting strike south of Cedar Rapids lit up the entire island and surrounding area. The river level was around 29 feet at the time this photo was taken. All three bridges to the island are under water. Note that power was lost to the downtown early Thursday morning and all buildings are dark.

Larry M needs to get a clue. Mays Island is built high above the river - with a concrete barrier around the island. Perhaps they weren't planning for a 500-1000 year flood when it was built.

I live in So IL near the MS and OH river confluence. We had our flood this spring in April. 13 inches in 36 hours. My question is why would a city spend millions to build such beatiful buildings in the middle of a river with no concrete wall ?

Gosh Andrew...that looks like a battleship but it's actually City Hall. What a complete nightmare.
