The attached photos are from the tornado that went through the Beaver Hills Addition of New Hartford, Iowa May 25, 2008.
New Hartford is 8.0 miles East of Parkersburg, Iowa and 18 miles Northwest of Waterloo, Iowa. The Beaver Hills Addition is North of downtown New Hartford. On the map it is the area around Deer Trail Drive by Trapper Road (County Highway T-55) and Beaver Valley Street (County Highway C-67).
I can confirm that one of the two and probably both of the fatalities in New Hartford were in this area.
The pictures with the file name "devastated" are of the property of a family that had just moved from Cedar Falls, Iowa two months ago. I was taking photos as I walked up to the property and all of a sudden the gentleman who was picking up what little he was finding became overwhelmed with emotion and just sat down and cried. As I talked to him he raised his hands up towards where the house once stood. He started talking about how it was a beautiful four bedroom house. As he said that it was if he realized he was pointing at nothing (since the house is now gone) and dropped his hands back down to his sides.
They were not home at the time of the tornado but were in Waterloo at a home improvement store buying a new toilet to replace the one in their basement.
The cemetery ditch photos are where some of their belongings end up. The gentleman mentioned several times that he wondered where his boat went. I found a piece of it about six hundred feet from their house on the far side of the cemetery tangled up by a tree.
We found the car in the cemetery ditch as we were looking for his families belongings. There was a ladies purse in the car and the car ignition was still turned on but nobody was found around the car. Also by the car was a dead deer carcass.
In a cruel twist it poured down rain twice as people were trying to clean-up. It was then rumored that more severe weather was moving in. The day finished with a beautiful sunset.
