Fighting Horse Keeps on Winning

Samson is the perfect example of the fighting spirit that refuses to quit, and he inspires me on a daily basis. Since bringing this big red goofy guy into my life two years ago, we have been on a rollercoaster journey full of ups and downs - more downs than ups, it often seems. Regardless, here we are, two years later, fresh on the heels of another battle which he has unmistakeably won.

Samson was discharged from NC State Veterinary Hospital two weeks ago after a life-threatening bout with bacterial pneumonia. After making a drastic improvement, he was discharged into my care for round the clock nursing. Although we had one more brief crash, he is still holding steady. Though there are days he may look tired, he never loses the will to fight, and is always willing to come digging around for a peppermint.

Since coming home, we received another round of bad news. Samson tested positive for an equine disease known as EPM - Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis. It is a protozoa-induced neurological condition which is fatal when untreated. Treatment is expensive, and after the looming bills from the university vet hospital, I was faced with the stress of one more impossible-seeming situation.

Then I stumbled across a photo contest, and entered my favorite picture. And within the next few days, I watched my photo climb through hundreds of pages towards the top. Once again, it seems the spirit and determination of this amazing creature has inspired people to rally for him, and support his cause.

The prize isn't huge, but it would pay for a portion of the treatment he needs; which is estimated around $800. The company issuing the contest has a pharmacy, and I could order the medication directly through them.

If you have a moment to spare, pull up his photo and vote. Share it with your friends, ask others to vote. There is no commitment required, not even an email address is requested. Just click and vote. An animal has not been given the ability to advocate for themselves - therefore, I have taken on the responsibility to help him continue to win the battle against the many odds he has been dealt.

Join with me, and take a stand to help this amazing animal. He deserves the best in life; and we can all have a part of giving it to him.
