No Parky For You

Cedar Rapids Gets Better and Better

I'm nearly 40. And in my 40 years I have lived out of Iowa a few times. Generally, ended up back here due to family but lately the silliness of living here is almost becoming enough to uproot and get out of dodge so to speak. Now before anyone comments with the predictable "Leave we didn't want ya here anyway" just allow me the floor to make my case. I’ve been on this towns side for a long time.
I have watched my property taxes SKYROCKET over the last 5+ years. To the point where it's almost laughable. My small ranch style home now costs $212/mo in just property tax. Which FYI is just under 1/4 of my house payment. For a home that according to the assessor’s site is assessed around $125k Tax Valued at $64k.
But that money must go to good use right? Well... Let's just look at the last few years. CR bought a hotel, gonna build an Amphitheater, gonna remodel the Cellular Center (but not add capacity) Building a massive new court house. We now seem to be annually rebuilding 1st Avenue by Lindale Mall.
The Cellular Center isn't expanding seating, so while several events went to the state’s other venues due to either size restrictions or expense of the arena, we just decided to pretty up the old one a little. But it's OK because we're going to put massive TV's on either side of it. Because people totally won't crash looking at those. How do we know? Well from one of the other articles someone was paid to research that and said it wouldn't cause accidents. I mean, when as anything on a display distracted a driver... Wait... Ohh TEXTING..
But that's OK, because when we have a 347 car pile-up, we'll be able to pay for the wreckage with the revenue cameras!!! My favorite is when our police stand on the bridge with their radar guns clocking the people being clocked by the revenue cams. Which is good because with the amount of shootings, stabbings, robberies, assaults and ..well just good ole fashion fun we have here I sleep better at night knowing that Sally Soccer Mom isn't cruising at 63mph.
Which will bring me to my last gripe. Which elementary school designed our parking situation in downtown?? Let's rip down parking garages, install digital parking meters and FORCE people to leave their spots. (See Pic Above) See cuz if your meter expires you can't continue to give the city money to leave your vehicle there. You actually have to leave the space for 20 minutes (who does that?) WHICH is plenty of time for maids to ticket you and increase revenue more. So let’s take a struggling Down Town area that really doesn't have much to offer anyway and tell visitors "Sorry, you can't park here anymore" What does it matter if I'm there 2 hours or 10 hours? Is the next persons money more fun than mine?
It used to be that you had some incentive to stay in the area, be it low cost of living, kids could walk around safely, and there were some good paying jobs. But, feel free to post the anticipated comments. I'm sure that with our property tax rates we're going to be on the top of the radar for attracting businesses into the area. And with the frequency this little town is seeing violent crime I'm sure everyone is going to want their kids in or around those areas. And if those don't take care of you all the jobs that currently can't be filled will make this a great city.
