Every year I hear about the Meskwaki Pow Wow on the news and I always regret not going, especially as a photographer. With camera in hand I set out to finally capture this event. It is held on the reservation down a long gravel road with signs pointing you in the right direction. Six dollars seemed reasonable to get in. They had endless booths of Indian wares and food for sale. I tried the Indian taco (fry bread)it was very good. The event started at 1:30 and if not for the long winded emcee the day would have been perfect. The dancers were incredible, especially the younger male dancers. Seems the women don't get as showy as the men. All in all a great time, fabulous weather, food, and a great photo opportunity.

A "reservation" is land set aside by the Federal government for the tribes to reside upon. Our "settlement" as it is called is land purchased with monies by the Meskwaki tribe, so it is owned outright by the tribe.

We stopped on Sunday. The pagentry, the color, was awesome! However, I thought it lacked organization. They went at least 20 min. beyond the scheduled start time, and the announcer rambled. Food booths didn't look too clean.

I'm glad you finally got to experience Meskwaki powwow. I would like to point out that you were at the Meskwaki "settlement" and not a "reservation".Take just a moment to ask someone there and they will be glad, and proud, to explain the difference.
