CR Sizzlers win Silver at Bball Tourney

The Cedar Rapids Sizzlers took the silver medal in the championship game at the 8th Annual Granny Basketball State Tournament held in West Des Moines, Iowa on the weekend of June 16-17.
The Sizzlers were beat by the Des Moines Hot Pinks by a score of 56 to 50 in the championship game, held at Valley High School on the afternoon of June 17.
Members of the Sizzlers include Susan Cahalan, Dana Daves, Charlotte Emerson, Lois Henderson, Alice Hoffmeier, Linda Jennings, Roberta Lowery, Diana Marker, Linda Mceowen, Lori Neblung, Lola Reisner and Kate Sanders. Members of the Hot Pinks include Linda Burke, Jewel Chapman, Mary Kay France, Karen Gideon, Judith Harms, Nancy Jo Henning, Ritz Leitzinger, Roxanne Menke, Carolyn Sutton, Patsy Tallman and Becky Webb.
In addition to the Sizzlers and the Hot Pinks, the teams which competed in this year’s tournament include the Ankeny Honey Bees, the Cedar Rapids Late Bloomers, the Center Point Model T’s, the Des Moines Car X, the Des Moines Classic Chassis, the Des Moines Lucky 13, the Indianola Motorcycle Grannies, the Lansing Great Dames and the Williamsburg Elites.
Granny Basketball is played by women following the traditional six-on-six rules for women’s basketball and wearing vintage 1920s era uniforms. It is part of an Iowa tradition of basketball which goes back 114 years.
The tournament was held in conjunction with the 26th annual Iowa Senior Olympics, which comprised a variety of sporting events open to those age 50 and up. The Iowa Senior Olympics attracted athletes from around the state as well as from around the nation. The events included golf, tennis, bowling, track and field, Pickleball, softball, volleyball, three-on-three basketball, swimming, racquetball shuffleboard and horseshoes. Events took place at Valley High School and other venues in central Iowa.
