DID THE MOON SHIFT AND WHY?

I have to ask myself these questions after I took pictures of this year's first full moon. I would like to point out two craters that stand out and appear to have moved. I want to clarify that I am stating that I think the moon has shifted as a whole and I am merely using the two craters as a point of reference. I would like to know if the face of the moon shifts or rotates to a different position? Is this common?

The Mare Crisium crater is an almost circular dark area towards the top right side of the moon. That is where it shows up on most of my moon shots, until recently. (If you are unsure as to where these features are, just go on-line and look up mapping of the moon's craters.)

The other crater that I will bring to your attention is what I call the "Belly Button" of the moon. It's official name is Tycho crater. It is an almost perfectly round lighter circle towards the lower edge of the moon, almost bottom center. Again,in the first two pictures but not the third. This is approximately where it appears in countless other pictures that I have taken over the years.

In the third picture the Mare Crisium shows up almost to the top center of the moon. This is not a rotation of the photograph or of the camera. No trick photography here. You will also notice that the distance of the crater's outline to the distance of the edge of the moon has decreased in the third shot.

Now compare where the "Belly Button" or Tycho, is located on the first two pictures compared to the third. It is no longer bottom center. I have noticed small changes from year to year but nothing this obvious. Perhaps it isn't so significant...or is it? You decide.

If we are going to give a story like this so much attention, perhaps we should also go over how the moon shots were faked and how the earth is flat. (sarcasm) It could be a valuable topic if we turn it into a learning opportunity.

The Moon was recently hit with a large meteor, also the person above cited Cornell report..its accurate. Also take a compass and watch the sun set, its not True west, 10 minutes off, {check out you tube videos) earth tilted too. 8 degrees i read.

keith says ... on Monday, Mar 10 at 7:16 AM

The moon orbits the Earth once every 27.322 days. It also takes approximately 27 days for the moon to rotate once on its axis. As a result, the moon does not seem to be spinning but appears to observers from Earth to be keeping almost perfectly still

People who pay little attention to the sky, then suddenly start watching it seem to over react to normal phases of the moon. I'd recommend reading up on phases, etc. on wikipedia and other astrology sites.

F14TomCat says ... on Thursday, Jan 9 at 7:42 PM

If the U.S. is the face of Earth.....the "wake" dragged it down a few degrees. So, now Russia instead of Canada is magnetic north. The moons orbit was pulled .....the proof is 2 fold. 1 the phases are no longer all vertical and the face has shifted.

F14TomCat says ... on Thursday, Jan 9 at 7:35 PM

It seems that a dwarf planet "eres" i believe, passed through our solar system and threw quite a few planets/sattelites/moons our of allignment. Its magnetic field and "wake" pulled Everything. The north pole is now in Russia.

that's really funny, only few days a go I never thought there was such a thing called 'pole shift' and I remember saying the moon looks like its resting on its back, knowing nothing about science I ignored and now I read all this articles about it.

Have you watched the time lapse video nasa put out on libration? Watch the moon for two phases in the beginnin 2012 and then skip to near the end... Over the course of 2012 the degree of apparent tilt steadily increased, like a top slowing down....

Igor says ... on Monday, Jul 15 at 12:34 AM

I assume the moon is adjusting its position in relation to the changed earth's electromagnetical field. All objects move in direct dependence of each other, and whatever material the moon consists of, it will follow the bigger neighbour object earth.

Use rising or setting pix so you have a point of reference. The moons east and west will be up and down and vice or versa. North is still same as our north. Just use full or near full moon pics. Lay a 90' grid east-west-north-south and with the right

The moon has definitely shifted. Earth has not. Polaris is where it should be and has not been skewed. The moon Has been thrown off kilter by this comet Isin or Isun, whatever. There is definitely a reason NASA has stopped talking about it. END

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. I have been puling up things all morning on the web trying to figure out if the moon's face has changed. I don't see the face in the moon anymore.

Cral says ... on Wednesday, Mar 27 at 12:06 AM

Well, it's Mar. 2013 and the full moon that just arose has Tycho at the 3:00 position--way off from its 6:35 position. I didn't just get off the turnip truck; I've been looking at the moon for 60 years! The "Man in the Moon's" face is different!

angela says ... on Friday, Mar 8 at 3:56 PM

I'm 60-years-old and I have NEVER seen the moon look like this. Two weeks into this new year, 2013, the moon is exhibiting a crescent--on the bottom! What? Libration cannot explain this because this is way more than 7 degrees, more like 40 degrees!

Tom says ... on Wednesday, Dec 26 at 2:00 PM

No, the moon did not shift. This probably isn't even a result of lunar libration. As someone above said, field rotation. Take a picture of a full moon as it rises, and another of the full moon just as it sets. It will appear ~180 degrees rotated.

It's more likely that the moons tilt just changed due to the either the summer solstice or the Autumn equinox.

Temple got it right.....the moon shifts (or tilts) on its axis while it orbits, not by much, but u can see it with ur eye. Also, the moon is slowly floating further and further from the earth.. almost an inch a year, but thats not very much.

i know this says ... on Monday, Dec 3 at 3:49 PM

the moon is hollow, they kicked us off when we went there. thats why we havent gone back, they are mining the craters and living under its surface for protection.

observant says ... on Thursday, Nov 1 at 6:17 PM

The sun - moon plane has not changed, it is just our position that has changed, ie. the earth. See Isaiah 24:20.

BethBreeze says ... on Thursday, Nov 1 at 6:49 AM

The crater Tycho is on top this morning. YES the moon has not only shifted BUT is moving as turning a dial. A large mass object beyond Pluto? Something is causing this. Hmmm

Amateur Astronomer says ... on Tuesday, Oct 23 at 11:28 PM

This isn't due to libration. It is due to field rotation. Planets, constellations & the Moon seem to tilt as they move across the sky. Astro-photographers have to adjust for it when they take long exposures.

Dionysis says ... on Monday, Aug 13 at 12:20 PM

Cornel University recently published a report that effectively states the moon's "orbit is wrong" which cannot be explained by conventional reasons; they posit an "unknown" celestial body, beyond Pluto. Look it up.

Mars Masters says ... on Saturday, Jul 14 at 5:01 AM

Boris-yes Natasha. Lunar Libration?I rather doubt it.But that was then, and this IS NOW!Six months later, the shrinking crescentshows night after night a dark shadow-or perhaps no matter there at all-where the bottom point of crescent should be

Temple says ... on Wednesday, May 23 at 9:30 AM

It does shift, its called Lunar Libration. The moon is tilted on its axis (about 8 degrees) and so is the Earth (23.5 degrees) so we see it at different angles at different times of the year

Buck Nasty says ... on Thursday, May 3 at 12:42 AM

The moon is not shifting. The Earth wobbles on its axis, and true north can shift by several degrees daily. Combine this with the normal summer/winter tilting the Earth does, and that would account for the variations in your photographs.

proudstar52627 says ... on Wednesday, Mar 14 at 7:19 AM

is it the moon shifting or is the earth shifting who knows becouse if the polar ice caps melting then we must be shifting not the moon

stubbywebb says ... on Friday, Jan 20 at 2:36 PM

I think that if you look at how the earth tilts on its axis... and the seasonal differences.. you will realize this is probably most normal. We don't always see things the same all year around. but nice pictures!

Norma says ... on Thursday, Jan 19 at 1:30 PM

@RedlisterRimmer... Thanks. I did some more research on the subject. Very interesting. I wonder how quickly those irregular motions occur. The moon looked normal to me a few days before it was a full moon. I will post the shots that I took.

RedlisterRimmer says ... on Thursday, Jan 19 at 1:00 PM

Librations are irregular motions of the Moon in its elliptical orbit around the Earth. They are measured using longitudinal and latitudinal coordinates. Both are computed from a central point that is at a fixed geographical location on surface

Norma says ... on Monday, Jan 16 at 6:05 PM

@ Gone to Plaid...thanks for that! I have never heard of Lunar Libration. I will be doing a bit of research on that topic.

GoneToPlaid says ... on Monday, Jan 16 at 5:04 PM

The reason why the moon and those two craters appear to be shifted is due to lunar libration which allows us earthlings to see more than 50% of the moon's surface.

Norma says ... on Monday, Jan 16 at 5:02 PM
