Skunk in the can

I went out this morning (in Robins) to find the lid knocked off the garbage can for the second day in a row. When I went to put the lid back on the upright can I saw a black and white tail move and knew right away what it was… apparently a skunk had become trapped.

After my heart rate returned to normal, I went in the house and grabbed the camera. Then carefully tipped the can over with a long-handled broom so he could leave (hopefully) without incident. After about 5 minutes he left the can and trotted down the driveway and took refuge in culvert at the end of the driveway. He never did spray. :)

I was studying lizards in the Graham Mts of AZ and living at a campground there. Visitors asked me to release a trapped skunk. I had to lift the can with skunk out of the ground and turn it on its side. Skunk wandered off without spraying.
