I actually attempted one of these kicks in a semipro game back in 1997. It was maybe a 37-38 yard attempt (hard to tell because the field didn't have every yard marked, just every five yards) and unfortuantely I pushed it wide right.

I've seen this happen in the NFL twice in my whole entire life. This comes after a fair catch usually at the end of a half or a game. It's only happened 23 times in the NFL SINCE 1933. The last successful fair catch kick was in 1968 by Mac Percival.

Free Kicks can be kicked after safties and after any fair catch... This free kick was taken after a fair catch

What was the game situation leading up to this? Aren't free kicks only after safeties? Why would a team intentionally give up 2 points to try to kick a game-winning field goal, or is there a rule I don't know?
