  • Mother's Day Woes
    Happy Mother's Day

Mother’s Day weekend is almost upon us and so it a better chance for showers and storms.

Another area of low pressure develops, in our very active pattern, and move toward the state.  Unlike our late week storm, this one has more moisture associated with it.

Showers and isolated thunderstorms develop late on Saturday and continue into Sunday afternoon.

It might be time to consider an umbrella for a Mom’s Day gift!  Have a safe weekend.

  • Summer is Coming

A quieter weather regime is once again in place across the state.    Clouds break up tonight with the stronger northeast winds continuing.    Overnight the mercury will fall into the 40s with highs staying in the 60s through the weekend.   More rain is possible on Saturday.   Mother’s Day will be cloudy with the cool weather persisting.

We know however that summer is approaching, in fact, in under two months summer will be here.  Get you air conditioner ready!

  • A Preview of Summer

Highs TodayOnce again a vigorous area of low pressure and cold front will pass across the state.  The result will be scattered showers and storms developing from west to east across the state.  These showers and storms will gradually diminish on Wednesday.  Ahead of this storm we have seen a preview of summer with highs near 80.  Cooler weather moves in for tomorrow and will stay in place through the weekend.

Summer will certainly be here before we know it, in fact, summer begins on June 20 at 6:59pm.  Did you know that pool passes are now available for the Cedar Rapids pools?  We bought ours last week in the midst of a windy and cold Saturday afternoon.  Sooner or later summer will arrive.

  • Record Breaking Snowfall - March 27, 2008
    Dubuque Sets Snowfall Record
This weekend has taken its toll on Eastern Iowa.  With lots of ice and snow many folks are ready for spring to come and stay for a while.  However today we can celebrate a new record for snowfall in one Eastern Iowa City.
With 4.4” of new snow from today’ storm a new record seasonal maximum snowfall was set in Dubuque.
The new record stands at 76.2” which breaks the old record of 75.7” set back in 1961-1962.
Congratulations to everyone in Dubuque!  You can now say that you have lived through the snowiest winter on record, and we are not done yet.

  • Our First Spring Snowstorm - March 19, 2008

Winter Storm Precipitation BreakdownWinter is coming to a fairly tranquil end.  A weak disturbance will bring a few isolated rain/snow showers to the state, but that may wait until spring arrives.  The astronomical start of the spring season happens today at 12:48 am.  Thursday and Friday we watch a stronger area of low pressure approach the state.   It promises to bring rain and snow to the state.  Significant accumulations will be possible as this storm approaches with 3 to 6” likely in the watch area.  Stay with KCRG TV-9, Digital 9.2 and KCRG.com for the latest forecast updates as the track of the storm solidifies.

  • Beyond The Weather

The weather turns a little more active as we move through the end of the work week.  A disturbance in the upper atmosphere passes across the state today, bringing with it some isolated showers.  Temperatures today will still stay near normal with highs in the lower to middle 40s.  Tonight a more powerful storm develops and moves to our south.  Southern Iowa may see some snow showers late tonight and early tomorrow, but most of the activity remains south of Highway 34.

As long as we get some clearing in the morning the next couple of days you will want to try to see the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station as they move across the sky this weekend.

  • March 5 - Here We Go Again

A fast moving clipper will once again take over the weather picture during the next 24 hours.    Our first indication that the storm is moving in comes with an increase in overnight cloudiness.  It looks like light snow will develop sometime in the afternoon on Wednesday with the last of the snow moving out around midnight.  Once again a trace to 2 inches of a very light and powdery snow is possible.  Winds will also increase behind this storm, bringing some blowing and drifting problems to rural areas.

  • March 4 - Slowly But Surely...

Cedar Rapids Snowfall RecordsDubuque Snowfall RecordsDid you get spring fever on Sunday?  If you did you were not alone.  I could tell because as I stepped outside on Sunday, at about 5:00 pm, the smell of BBQ grills filled the air.  I think most folks wanted to get outside and enjoy some food cooked over a charcoal fire.  Unfortunately I could not be among them :(

Quickly, though, on Monday Waterloo Snowfall Recordsmorning the cold air returned and we were Iowa City Snowfall Recordsleft with snow.  Officially 1.2 " fell in Cedar Rapids, 1.6 " in Dubuque, 1.5" in Iowa City and 2.0" in Waterloo.  With the additional snowfall I thought it was a good time to once again update the top 10 snowiest winters to see how close to a record we really are.

Here is a posting, from a previous blog entry, that explains why the record seasonal snowfall in Cedar Rapids may be different than you previously heard.

In a nutshell here is what happened.  The Davenport National Weather Service put out a set of records for Cedar Rapids, Iowa City and Dubuque.  This included the 84.1" total for Cedar Rapids.  I had contacted the State Climatologist prior to that looking for the same information.

When I received his data I noticed a big difference in the two reports and posed a question asking which is correct.  In further investigating the snowfall records the State Climatologist discovered that the two top totals in Cedar Rapids could not be confirmed.  Data entry error was one of the thoughts he had on why the numbers were so high.  He contacted the Davenport National Weather Service and through more research the list you see now was put together and contains the correct record snowfall information.

The Davenport National Weather Service issued a new statement to reflect these changes.
