Harkin Assembling Big Campaign Finance Fund

By Scott Sanborn

(AP) - Senator Tom Harkin is reporting that he has more than $2.5 million cash on hand in his bid for a fifth Senate term.

Spokesman Matt Paul says that's roughly double what Harkin had at this point in the 2002 election cycle.

That's when Harkin faced a stiff challenge from then-U.S. Congressman Greg Ganske. Harkin easily defeated Ganske to win another six-year term.

Steve Rathje is the only Republican who has announced plans to seek Harkin's position. He is a Cedar Rapids businessman who has not previously sought public office.

Federal Election Commission records did not show a disclosure report for Rathje in the period ending July First. The reports are due on July 15th.

At the last filing, Rathje reported that as of March 31st he had about $65,000 in the bank.
