Dem. Presidential Hopefuls Scramble for Parking

CEDAR RAPIDS - If you're headed to downtown Cedar Rapids for the Farmers Market this Saturday, good luck parking along First Avenue. You're getting competition from the likes of Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, Bill Richardson and Chris Dodd.

The Cedar Rapids Coffee Company is located on First Avenue right across from the U.S. Cellular Center. They boast the best brew in town, but only if you can get there.

"We have a lot of drive through traffic they just stop in get coffee so they'll just go right on by us down the road to somewhere else," said Matt Ford, Cedar Rapids Coffee Company.

Saturday more than a thousand people are expected to pay up to $500 a head to dine with democratic presidential hopefuls for the Hall of Fame Dinner. They want more than support, they want parking spots.

"Our main request for hooded meters are the parking lots under across from the Crown Plaza Hotel," said Doug Forbes, Cedar Rapids Parking Department.

The owner of a coffee shop called the city and complained and here's the compromise, they won't mark off these parking spots but there will be plenty other meters with hoods on them come Saturday.

Candidates like Hillary Clinton and John Edwards are battling for spots close to the event. Clinton asked the city if she could put a banner above the city-owned Five Seasons Parkade entrance. And Edwards wants to hang a poster in this parking lot he's reserved for the weekend.

"If one campaign received permission do they all receive permission do the all get the same amount of space in the same location and that's something that we really don't want to be involved in," said Forbes.

The city has granted the politicians space, but not the right to advertise on city property. That decision is pending. And the coffee will be ready whether the customers can get to it or not.
