SOLON -- Kevin Miller’s name came up in the mix for the head job at Iowa City West, but ultimately Miller decided to continue what he loves doing: Coaching at Solon. Miller and the Spartans are hoping for another November trip to the UNI Dome.
The Spartans reached the semifinals last fall, and this year’s seniors want to add to the school’s tradition.
“There’s a tradition here,” Brandon Kramer said. “We want to just keep that up.”
“It says up on the scoreboard, ‘Excellence is Tradition,’” lineman Logan Linderbaum said. “We just want to keep that going and don’t want to disappoint anybody.”
Finding someone to replace Jacob Black at quarterback has been an ongoing process. But the Spartans know they’ve got some serious speed, as showcased by their state track championship.
“We’re going to do different things to put those guys in positions where they can utilize their speed,” Miller said.
But the schedule will be a daunting one. The Spartans open with Regina, and now Xavier joins the district after moving down from 4A.
“In my opinion, we’re in the most difficult district in 3A,” Miller said. “Top to bottom, there is not an easy game. Each week, we just need to control the things we can control.”
