EAST DUBUQUE, Illinois - John Rothering can do a lot with a soccer ball.
Rothering said, “It’s a lot of fun. It’s kind of like going to the park or something. “
Most recently he’s using that ball on a golf course.
Lacoma Golf Course General Manager Andy DeSollar said, “Foot golf is basically playing golf with a soccer ball.”
DeSollar says it’s the same concept as golf. Forget the clubs. All you need is your own two to get the ball close to the hole in as few kicks as possible.
The hole in foot golf is 21 inches in diameter.
“You don’t need to be a skilled soccer player to play foot golf,” said DeSollar.
DeSollar said adding the new sport is all an effort to attract a new crowd.
“The number of golfers in the past 10 to 15 years has been declining. And this is a way to expose them to a golf course, “said DeSollar.
Veteran golfers say they’ve noticed the lack of young people on the links.
Golf Dave Winders said, “A lot of kids these days can’t afford clubs. The parents can’t afford them. “
Now they’re curious to see if foot golf will tap into new interest in traditional golf.
“Bringing new players and people to the facility and possibly converting some of those foot golfers to golfers,” said DeSollar.
On Sunday June 29th, Lacoma Golf Course will host a free round of foot golf from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m
