After not being ranked in the preseason, Kennedy now looks like a team ready to make some noise this postseason. Why? Because the Cougars follow the championship recipe of good defense and pitching.
“Playing baseball my whole life, defense always wins games,” junior Sammy Lizarraga said. “Offense helps but defense is what wins games and big games.”
“We have amazing pitching too,” senior shortstop Derek Jacobus said. “You can’t ask for much better and the fielding is doing great. Pitching and fielding is what Coach Hoyer preaches and we’re doing it great.”
The numbers are there to prove Kennedy’s claim of strong defense. Through 14 games the Cougars fielding percentage is 96.7. The team ERA is 2.33.
“We have three of our top four from last year back,” Coach Bret Hoyer said. “And they’ve been throwing really well for us this year. Our defense has been fantastic, and we’ve got a little bit of athleticism on defense and they’re making some plays.”
After such a strong start, the target in the MVC might now lie on the backs of the Cougars which is perfectly ok with them.
“We always see our opponents best, best pitcher, best defense. They always come out to play.”
