Waterloo Police Identify Two Suspects in Church Burglary

By Forrest Saunders

WATERLOO, Iowa — Waterloo police believe they’ve identified two of the four burglars who broke into the Burton Avenue Baptist Church back in May.

Police have issued warrants for 21-year-old Taylor Gray and 20-year-old Jalan Culpepper of Waterloo. Both men face potential charges of first degree criminal mischief, second degree theft and third degree burglary.

Police said on May 31st four males shattered the glass door of the church. Once inside, they stole electronics and wreaked havoc, smashing computers, busting door locks and leaving some rooms destroyed.

Pastor Garry Moore said the church has spent more than a month putting pieces back together. A lot of time was dedicated to cleaning up a white residue left behind after vandals sprayed up to seven fire extinguishers around the church. The powder had to be removed for potential health concerns.

“Like the Bible says, ‘everybody is a sinner’. Some of us act out the worst possible there is,” Moore said.

Moore didn’t have an exact figure for the cost of damages, but said insurance has approved $400,000 for repairs.

Those with information on the two suspects, or the burglary can contact the Cedar Valley Crime Stoppers at 855-300-TIPS (8477).
