Waterloo May Consider Car Seizure Proposal
WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) Waterloo officials may soon consider a proposal that would allow authorities to seize vehicles used in certain crimes and hold them until the owners pay a fine.
The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports the City Council may discuss the issue at its Aug. 4 meeting. The ordinance would allow authorities to tow and impound cars used in crimes involving drugs and weapons, among others. Owners would pay a $250 penalty and other charges.
Safety Services Director Dan Trelka told council members Monday that the ordinance would have many benefits, including reducing city liability by moving cars to a secure impound. He said it may also deter people from lending vehicles to others who may use them for unlawful activities.
