Waterlogged Eastern Iowa Watching Skies for Rain

Associated Press

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — People in waterlogged eastern Iowa are hoping heavy rains hold off.

Low-lying areas around Iowa City and in cities along the swollen Mississippi River have already flooded, and flood barriers have been erected in most of those areas.

Coralville Lake, a reservoir built north of Iowa City to control flooding on the Iowa River, is projected to crest next week about a foot below its emergency spillway.

But heavy rains in the coming days would lead to more serious flooding.

Light rain fell Saturday on many areas in eastern Iowa, but the National Weather Service says there's a 60 percent chance of heavier rain Saturday night that could bring up to an inch.
