WATERLOO, Iowa — Dozens attended a vigil Sunday night to remember a Waterloo woman who died earlier in the week.
Those who knew 29-year-old Crystal Gaffney organized the event at Lafayette Park in Waterloo.
There people lit candles, signed notes to her, and walked around the park. There was also a brief memorial service for those gathered.
Deputies from the Linn County Sheriff’s Office discovered Gaffney’s body near Walker on Wednesday morning. An autopsy confirmed her identity and found she died of blunt force trauma.
The father of one of her children, 36-year-old Shaun Hogan, is charged with First Degree Murder in her death. A judge set his bond at $1 million at a court hearing on Friday. At that hearing, her uncle John Maynard described his niece as good person who was just looking to be loved.
Her family has set up a benefit fund through Veridian Credit Union. Those who want to donate can do so by stopping at any branch location. The money will help support her three children.
