Ushers Ferry Lodge Nears Completion

Ushers Ferry Historic Village is known for its old buildings. The general store and blacksmith shop take visitors back to the early 1900s. But it's a new facility on the grounds that's getting a lot of attention. The Usher's Ferry Lodge is schedule to be complete by the end of this month. It will be used by the Cedar Rapids Parks and Recreation Department for some programs. It can also be rented for special events like wedding receptions and corporate Christmas parties.

Even though the building still is under construction the phone is ringing with people wanting to reserve the space. They've already booked 7 weddings for the coming year. The building's great room can hold up to 300 people and can be used year-round. It also features an outdoor patio with a fire pit. It's unlike any other facility the Cedar Rapids Parks and Recreation Department currently has and building it was a big investment.

”The construction costs are significant there's no denying that. The entire project will cost around $1.2-1.3 million. A large chunk of that is FEMA money for projects and facility lost here that are being consolidated into a new facility,” said Sven Leff Director of Cedar Rapids Parks and Recreation Dept.

The Parks and Rec Department is hoping the new building will bring in a steady stream of revenue. It costs $2,700 dollars to rent the building on a Saturday during the summer. They plan to start holding events in the new facility starting in October.
