UNI to Resume Homecoming Parade After 7-Year Break

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — The University of Northern Iowa is bringing back its annual homecoming parade this year after a seven-year break.

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports the parade will be held on Saturday, Sept. 20, as part of the previous week’s homecoming celebration.

Assistant Alumni Director for Programming Connie Hansen says 23 student groups have expressed interest in participating.

Because full-sized floats are difficult to navigate through the route, participants will be dressing up golf carts to promote their organization or cause.

Hansen says there was no single reason that led the university to discontinue the parade after 2007. She says major street construction led to the event’s cancellation in 2008, and it hasn’t been held since.

The theme is “Students by Day, Panthers by Night.”
