UI Puts Out Flood Protections on Campus
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - The University of Iowa has placed protective measures around campus in response to potential flooding from the swollen Iowa River.
The university placed a 12-foot sand-filled flood barrier around the Mayflower Residence Hall on Tuesday. It is currently placing similar barriers along the east and west banks of the Iowa River.
An interlocking metal wall is also being placed around the Art Building West, which holds a library and classrooms. University spokesman Stephen Pradarelli says the measures are precautionary, and similar work was implemented during flooding last year.
The U.S. Corps of Engineers plans to increase the flow of water coming from the nearby Coralville Lake Reservoir. It is expected to flood low-lying areas in Iowa City.
