MASON CITY (AP) — A trial date has been set for a Mason City man accused of killing torturing and killing a dog, then leaving his infant daughter alone in the house.

The Mason City Globe Gazette reports that trial for 26-year-old Dacota Alan Witham has been set for Oct. 7 in Cerro Gordo County District Court after he pleaded not guilty to animal torture. Witham also faces an Oct. 28 trial on separate charges of domestic abuse assault and child endangerment.

Police were initially called Aug. 9 for report of an assault. After an investigation, officers discovered a dog in Witham’s garage that had been killed in an inhumane manner. Officers also alleged Witham left his 7-month-old daughter unattended.

Witham remains jailed in lieu of a $7,000 bond.
