IOWA CITY — A summer of statues is coming to an end in and around Iowa City.

The statues that make up the popular public art project called Herky on Parade will start disappearing on Tuesday.

The 84 likenesses of the University of Iowa mascot dressed up in different themes were first unveiled in May.

Not all response was positive, as vandals knocked over one less than a week after the six-foot statues first went on display.

Despite the damage, the Iowa City and Coralville Convention and Visitors Bureau considers the project a success.

“It’s gone by fast, just like in 2004, but folks will have a chance to see all of the Herkys at FRY Fest and then in 2024, we’ll launch out Herky on Parade 3,” said Josh Schamberger.

Many of the statues from this year will be auctioned off in the coming weeks. Others will stay on display at select businesses.
