Fresh produce, handmade crafts, and home baked treats return to downtown Cedar Rapids this weekend. The first downtown farmers market of the year starts Saturday morning. One big change this year is the location. Due to construction on Fourth Avenue, the market will shift to take up 2nd and Third Avenue. It will still be easy to find your favorite vendors though, Most of the vendors who are typically on Third Ave will stay there and those who were on Fourth Ave will move here to Second Ave.

Ninety percent of this years vendors have been at the market before but there are about 22 new ones signed up to appear on various dates. One of those new vendors is Tom Vander Vaart owner and creator of RepeaTables. He gives old wooden pallets a new use by turning them into custom made tables. It’s a hobby that started about a year ago and he’s thrilled to take his business to the market. Tom says he’s not in this to make lots of money he does it because he loves it.

”Honestly the biggest thing for me is I get the biggest kick out of process of designing the table. I take a lot of pride in them. I wouldn’t let people take one unless I knew it would be rock solid and last for many years. I want it to be a conversation piece,” said Vander Vaart.

Tom’s tables can be made for outdoor use on the back patio or inside in the kitchen. Tom will be appearing at 3 of the farmers markets, the first on July 19th.

The market is open 7:30 a.m. to noon the first and third Saturday of each month through September.
