Stations Refuse to Run Iowa Treasurer Commercial

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Some television stations say they will not run a College Savings Iowa ad featuring Iowa Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald because it could be considered political.

Fitzgerald’s office plans to spend $150,000 to run the ad statewide starting August 18th.

But broadcasters say the ad could trigger a legal requirement that they give equal opportunity to Fitzgerald’s opponent in the November election, Republican Sam Clovis.

KCCI-TV, WOI-TV and KYOU-TV say they will not run the state-sponsored ad featuring Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald’s deputy treasurer Karen Austin says the ad will be revised for stations that raise concerns. She says the ad is not political and is part of a long-running campaign to encourage participation in the popular college savings program.

But Republicans say the ad is meant to boost Fitzgerald’s image before the election.
