INDEPENDENCE — A number of Eastern Iowa schools closed their doors early today because of heat and humidity. The Independence School District was one of those who let students out early.
The district opened a new Junior-Senior high school with air conditioning in each room. But because the elementary buildings don’t have that same amenity, all students were released at the same time to keep bus schedules consistent.
District officials also said school would let out early on Friday.
Like nearly all schools in Iowa, Independence got a waiver to starts classes early.
Otherwise, students would not be back in school until after Labor Day this year, when the temperatures might be a little cooler.
