Sen. Harkin Wants to Continue Advocating for Those With Disabilities

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Iowa Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin co-authored the Americans with Disabilities Act 24 years ago.

He was in Iowa City today to mark this anniversary.

As he steps away from the Senate after five terms, Harkin says he’ll keep working with policy makers, especially as an advocate for people with disabilities.

“Working both in Iowa and nationally and globally to change the infrastructure. To make it better for people with disabilities to have a full life, to fully participate in society,” Harkin said.

He plans to do that by working with Drake University’s Harkin Institute for Public Policy. He says teaching some classes and speaking to students about the disabilities also will be a priority.
