MONTROSE, Iowa (AP) — Golf cart drivers may soon need to park their vehicles at nightfall in the small southeast Iowa city of Montrose.
The Daily Gate City newspaper in Keokuk reports officials in the city along the Mississippi River are moving to ban use of the vehicles at night.
An ordinance approved in 2012 allows golf carts on city streets after dark if they’re equipped with headlights and taillights, but City Clerk Celeste Cirinna told council members at a meeting last week that state law limits operation of the vehicles to daylight hours.
Cirinna says if golf cart operators were hit after sunset, they could sue and the city’s insurance wouldn’t provide coverage because Montrose is violating state law.
The council is scheduled to take up the matter again July 3.
