Retired Council Bluffs mayor to seek new office

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) ó It seems the retired longtime mayor of Council Bluffs just canít stay away from politics.

The Council Bluffs Nonpareil reports that Tom Hanafan ó who retired as mayor of the western Iowa city in January after 25 years ó is now running for the Pottawattamie County Board of Supervisors.

Hanafan filed his election nomination papers Friday ó after the deadline for candidates running under a political party affiliation. That means Hanafan will run as an independent.

A Democrat during his tenure as mayor, Hanafan says county races should be nonpartisan. He also says he wants to rein in county government spending if heís elected in the Nov. 4 race.

Republicans Scott Belt, Loren Knauss and Justin Schultz also are running. No Democrats filed to run.
