Retired Council Bluffs mayor to seek new office

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — It seems the retired longtime mayor of Council Bluffs just can’t stay away from politics.

The Council Bluffs Nonpareil reports that Tom Hanafan — who retired as mayor of the western Iowa city in January after 25 years — is now running for the Pottawattamie County Board of Supervisors.

Hanafan filed his election nomination papers Friday — after the deadline for candidates running under a political party affiliation. That means Hanafan will run as an independent.

A Democrat during his tenure as mayor, Hanafan says county races should be nonpartisan. He also says he wants to rein in county government spending if he’s elected in the Nov. 4 race.

Republicans Scott Belt, Loren Knauss and Justin Schultz also are running. No Democrats filed to run.
