RUSSELL (AP) — Authorities say two people from Colorado were killed in a small plane crash over the weekend in southern Iowa.

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Monday night that 53-year-old John Joseph Wood and 51-year-old Resia Lynn Wood, both of Colorado Springs, Colorado, died in the Saturday afternoon crash in Wright Township, near Russell.

Authorities say the names are being released based on evidence collected at the scene of the crash and communication with family members.

The National Transportation Safety Board is leading an investigation into the crash. A spokesman says a preliminary report will be released in a few days, but a full report with details about what caused the crash may take about a year.

The crash involved a single-engine RV-7A aircraft.
