Testimony: gang activity linked to 2011 shooting

FORT DODGE (AP) — A woman has testified at a Fort Dodge man’s murder trial that gang activity may be linked to a shooting in 2011.

The Messenger reports the witness testified Wednesday during the trial of 28-year-old Derrick McElroy. She said there was a feud between two gangs, and that McElroy was involved in one of the gangs.

McElroy is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Brandyn Preston, who was shot during a bonfire party in May 2011. Preston survived the shooting but was paralyzed from the shoulders down. Police say his death in January 2012 was caused by the injuries.

Prosecutors say McElroy shot a weapon with the intention of hitting anyone at the party. He has pleaded not guilty, and his attorney says another man is responsible.
