Shots Fired In Cedar Rapids; Michigan Man In Custody

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — A Michigan man faces numerous weapons charges after an early morning shots fired investigation.

Cedar Rapids police officers responded to a shooting shortly after 4 a.m. in the 1400 block of Fifth Avenue SE. Responding officers learned that the home at 1435 Fifth Ave. SE was hit with four shots.

While investigating the shooting, police said they noticed two people acting suspiciously in the 1100 block of 15th Street SE. One of those people, 19-year-old Christopher Torres, was carrying a sawed-off rifle, police said.

Torres and a woman he was with were taken into custody. Following an investigation, Torres — who told investigators he was from Michigan — was charged with unauthorized possession of offensive weapons, carrying weapons and possession of firearms and offensive weapons by a felon.

No one was injured in the shooting.

Police credited the response from several witnesses who assisted with the investigation.
