IOWA CITY, Iowa — An Iowa City man is accused of spitting in a police officer’s face and sneaking marijuana into the Johnson County Jail, among other offenses.

According to Iowa City police criminal complaints, officers were called to the 400 block of South Dodge Street at 3:11 a.m. Wednesday for a report of a domestic assault. Responding officers encountered 32-year-old Abdiqani O. Haji Mohamud in the area. Police said Haji Mohamud smelled strongly of alcohol, appeared to be intoxicated and was incapable of forming coherent sentences. He was arrested for public intoxication — third or subsequent offense.

Police said Haji Mohamud responded to his arrest by kicking the squad car door and spitting in an officer’s face. That officer also suffered a cut to his shin while trying to restrain Haji Mohamud.

While being booked at the Johnson County Jail, police said they found marijuana hidden in Haji Mohamud’s sock.

In addition to the public intoxication offense, Haji Mohamud faces charges of introducing a controlled substance to a detention facility, a Class D felony; interference with official acts causing bodily injury, an aggravated misdemeanor; assault on peace officers, a serious misdemeanor; and possession of a controlled substance.
