Police: Iowa City Woman Registers .439 Percent Blood Alcohol Content

IOWA CITY, Iowa — An Iowa City woman was charged with public intoxication earlier this week after being discovered with a blood alcohol content more than five times the legal limit.

According to an Iowa City police criminal complaint, police responded to Gasbys, 2302 Muscatine Ave., at 2:43 p.m. Tuesday for a report of a woman who refused to leave the convenience store. Police said a clerk asked the woman, identified as 30-year-old Patricia Hunley, to leave the store and Hunley responded by threatening the clerk.

By the time officers arrived on the scene, Hunley was leaning up against a car, trying to stay upright, police said. Police said Hunley appeared to be intoxicated and had urinated on herself. She admitted to drinking two bottles of Black Velvet, police said.

Hunley was taken into custody and given a post-arrest breath test, which revealed a blood alcohol content of .439 percent. The legal limit to operate a motor vehicle in Iowa is .08 percent and .30 percent can cause a person to go into a coma or die, according to studies.

Hunley was initially hospitalized due to her high blood alcohol content.

Tuesday’s incident marks the second time in less than a year that Hunley has been arrested for having a blood alcohol content topping .40 percent. On August 12, 2013, she was arrested after police were called to 2724 Wayne Ave. in Iowa City. Police said Hunley was pounding on doors at an apartment complex. She submitted to a breath test, which showed her blood alcohol content to be .462 percent.

On July 29, 2012, a North Liberty man — Justin A. Clark — was arrested for drunken driving. During that incident, Clark posted a blood alcohol content of .627 percent.
