NORTH LIBERTY, Iowa — A Cedar Rapids man faces drunken driving and weapons charges after he was found passed out in a vehicle in a field.

According to criminal complaints, 39-year-old Chad M. Bird was found passed out in a vehicle that was in a field north of Penn Street and Jones Boulevard in North Liberty around 12:30 a.m. May 25. Police said they had difficulty waking Bird, who smelled strongly of alcohol, had “extremely slurred speech” and showed other signs of intoxication.

Police said Bird admitted to drinking and officers located open bottles of scotch and tequila in his vehicle. Police also found two loaded firearms that were next to Bird in the center console.

Bird refused to submit to a breath test and resisted officers’ efforts during the investigation. He was arrested and faces charges of drunken driving, a serious misdemeanor; carrying weapons, an aggravated misdemeanor; and interference with official acts causing bodily injury, a serious misdemeanor.
