Man convicted of killing wife seeks new trial
OTTUMWA (AP) The lawyer for a southeast Iowa man convicted of killing his pregnant wife is seeking a new trial.
The Ottumwa Courier reports Seth Techel’s attorney filed a motion Tuesday asking that his first-degree murder conviction be set aside and a judge order a new trial.
Lawyer Gerald Feuerhelm filed the motion ahead of the sentencing next month of Techel, who was found guilty July 24 of first-degree murder and nonconsensual termination of a human pregnancy. It was his third trial following the 2012 killing of 23-year-old Lisa Techel at their home in Agency, in rural southeast Iowa.
Jurors at two previous trials last year had been unable to agree on a verdict, leading to mistrials.
