DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — A 23-year-old Iowan charged with killing his wife and unborn child is going on trial for a third time after two previous juries couldn’t reach a verdict.
Seth Techel appeared Monday in a Scott County courtroom in Davenport along with 75 potential jurors who could be selected to hear the two-week trial.
Techel’s charged with first-degree murder and nonconsensual termination of a human pregnancy in the May 2012 death of 23-year-old Lisa Techel, who was five months pregnant.
Prosecutors say Seth Techel shot his wife while she sleeping in the trailer they shared in rural southeastern Iowa. They say he wanted her dead because he was pursuing a relationship with another woman.
Seth Techel argues he is wrongly accused and that she was likely killed by a mentally ill neighbor.
