Independence man sentenced to 21 years in federal prison for child pornography

CEDAR RAPIDS — An Independence man who distributed and possessed over 30,000 images of child pornography was sentenced Tuesday in federal court to over 21 years in prison.

Steven Risk, 38, pleaded guilty to one count of distribution of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography May 9. During the plea hearing, Risk admitted he distributed and possessed child pornography between 2011 and 2013. He also admitted to trading child pornography with others online and to possessing over 30,000 images and 50 videos of child pornography.

U.S. District Chief Judge Linda Reade sentenced Risk to 262 months in prison, and he must also serve a 15-year term of supervised release. He also must comply with all sex offender registration and public notification requirements.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Tremmel and was investigated by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Homeland Security Investigations, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
