Hills Man Accused Of Hitting Pregnant Woman with SUV, Failing To Stop

Police said a Hills man hit a pregnant woman with his SUV, but didn’t pull over to check on her.
According to Iowa City police, officers responded to the intersection of Melrose Avenue and Finkbine Lane at 5:51 p.m. May 1 for a report of a pedestrian a woman who is five months pregnant who was hit by a gray SUV. The woman and other witnesses said she got off a city bus and was crossing Melrose Avenue when she was hit by the SUV. The driver left the scene without stopping, police said.
The bus driver and another witness were able to call in the driver’s license plate and the driver was eventually identified as 56-year-old Ronnie L. West.
Police said West admitted to hitting the woman with his 2008 Toyota 4Runner and that he should have stopped to provide the woman aid. He was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an injury accident, a serious misdemeanor.
Police said the woman had leg pain and possible internal injuries. She refused an ambulance, but went to the hospital with a family member, police said.
