Elderly Man Charged In Wrong-Way Interstate 380 Crash

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — A charge has been filed against an elderly man who drove the wrong way on Interstate 380 and caused a seven-vehicle crash last month.

According to the Cedar Rapids Police Department, 71-year-old John Coverdale was cited with violation of a one-way traffic designation.

Sometime around 6:50 a.m. on July 23, Coverdale drove the wrong way at Kirkwood Boulevard. Police were called about the wrong way driver heading north in the southbound lanes of Interestate 380 at 6:53 a.m. While officers were en route, Coverdale was in a collision involving seven vehicles, including his own.

The collision closed southbound 380 for about an hour.
