DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) — A Dubuque man has been given probation for trying to get his daughter to obtain harmful pills he could slip into his wife’s drink.

The Dubuque Telegraph Herald says (http://bit.ly/1nKFa6o ) 55-year-old Michael Schoonover was sentenced on Monday in Dubuque County District Court. The judge followed the prosecutors’ recommendation that Schoonover receive five years of probation and a suspended prison sentence of five years.

A criminal complaint says Schoonover asked his 17-year-old daughter to get “unknown pills” for him so he could secretly put them in a drink for his wife. He said he wanted to put the girl’s mother in a hospital or “to sleep.”

The girl contacted an older sister and police.
