IOWA CITY, Iowa — An Iowa City man faces multiple felonies following an assault.

The Iowa City Police Department responded to an assault in the 900 block of Benton Street at 3 a.m. Thursday. The alleged victim and 25-year-old Freddie J. Mabane, of 2012 Davis St., got into an argument that escalated into Mabane hitting the victim multiple times, police said. The victim, who is not identified in the criminal complaints, suffered swelling and bruises and had a mark on the side of her neck “consistent with forceful pressure from a hard object.”

The victim told police that Mabane had a .22 pistol. The pistol was found in a vehicle that Mabane had access to, police said. Mabane — a felon — admitted to touching the gun earlier, but denied possessing it at the time of the assault.

Mabane faces charges of control of a firearm by a felon, a Class D felony; going armed with intent, a Class D felony; carrying weapons, an aggravated misdemeanor; and a simple misdemeanor — interference with official acts — for hiding in a bath tub when police were searching the residence for him.
